Message from the Chief

Welcome to our first ever newsletter and “Thank You” Carmen Glass for making it happen. Our goal with “Fire House News” is to keep our firefighters and our community informed of current and upcoming events and happenings within the fire department and public safety in general.

That being said – it is an exciting and busy time for us here in the fire department. We set out at the beginning of 2016 with a new strategic plan in place, new living quarters completed at station 1 and eager to move forward with the intent of building an even stronger volunteer based fire department. Two years in and, while not at 100% just yet, we are closing in on staffing 24/7 for medical and single engine response with the help of the volunteer shift program and some very dedicated volunteer firefighters. We have welcomed two new full time residents to the department and continue to add new volunteers to the roster.

Training has been intense and well attended in Fortuna and throughout the Eel River Valley with completions of this years’ fire academy, driver-operator program and most recently, wildland firefighter training. A huge thanks to Division Chief Rus Brown and all the instructors that put in the time and effort to make it happen.

Summer is now in full swing as is fire season and the preparation continues…

Green’s Pharmacy Re-Opens in New Building

Greens Pharmacy

Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department would like to congratulate Robert and Mary Johnson on the re-opening of Green’s Pharmacy. Three years after a fire destroyed the old Star Hotel that was home to Green’s Pharmacy and several other local businesses, construction has concluded on the new building at the original site. The Johnsons along with Essentials Nail Care, Color Bar Salon, Fred Robinson State Farm and Cake n’ Bacon have taken up residence in the newly completed building.

The Grand Reopening Celebration was held May 11, 2018 and included a barbecue, giveaways, live music, entertainment and many of the downtown merchants joined in the special event, as it signified a re-birth of a revitalized downtown shopping area.

Member Profile

Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department would like you to join us in welcoming our newest Resident Volunteer, Jake Brennan.
Jake joined us in March and recently attended the Eel River Valley Probationary Academy along with 23 other volunteers from thoughout the valley.

Jake’s future plans are to attend College of the Redwoods where he intends on completing the EMT course.

Jake comes to us from Fairfield, CA where he obtained his First Responder Certification as well as training in Wildland Firefighting. Jake states that “the reason I want to participate in the Resident Program is to learn as much as I possibly can.” He goes on to say that “by living here I feel it will give me the ability to learn skills that I would not be able to learn anywhere else. I believe the wide range of opportunities is something I have a lot of interest in and feel that I will become a great asset not only to this department but to other ones in the future.”

Since joining our department he has participated in the Volunteer Staffing Program and has already become a valuable member of the team here at Fortuna Volunteer Fire.
